In India, we don’t have a central repository to check criminal records. Hence, you can go to your local police station to request them to do a background check on the person. This may or may not be useful. However, there are a few companies as well as lawyers who are expert in getting background verification. They will charge you some fees but you will be assured about the criminal records.
