How to keep house roof cool in summer?

  • The best way to control the temperature and make your roof green is by growing plants on the roof. Growing plants there will help you to cool down the building naturally. The mud acts as an insulator and absorbs the direct heat of the sun.

  • A layer of white lime can also be applied on the roof. It acts as a reflective surface so can be used as a method to reflect back the heat

  • You can place stack bundles of straws on a plastic sheet on the roof and sprinkle water to keep the roof moist and cool in summer. It will act as an insulator and let the roof remain cool throughout the day

  • The best way to keep rooms cool is by allowing ventilation. Keep your windows and doors open early in the morning and late evening. Let the cool air replace the hot air from 5 am to 8 am and again from 7 pm to late at night.

  • Apply cool roof coatings. They improve the solar reflection of the roof surface and help it remain cool.

I hope these methods on how to keep roof cool in summer will be helpful to you.

Hi Raghav, I came across your question about how to reduce heat from concrete roof India. I have a few ideas for this and can share them with you. We painted our roof with a lighter colour to reduce the heat, and it worked well.

So, I’ll share a few more tips with you here.

How to Cool Roof in Summer?

  1. The first thing you can do to cool your roof during summer is to increase the shade level. If you block the path of direct sun reaching your roof, the place will feel cool to a great extent. Do so by planting tall trees around your home.

  2. Another idea is to use solar shingles and tiles. These are new products which help in decreasing the temperature of the roof. They do so by reflecting the solar and infrared radiation.

  3. As I did, you can paint your house roof in light colours. Dark colours absorb heat and thus lead to an increase in temperature. If you use lighter colours, the heat absorption will reduce.

This is how to protect roof from sun heat in India. I hope this helps.
